A guitar, sometimes a bass, a possibly incomplete drum kit. With these implements between them, Mr. Anus and Mr. Horribly Charred Infant set about to render the inner lives of four-year olds by simultaneously improvising youth anxiety scenarios and smash music patterns grinding tectonically against themselves. Mom, I Gave the Cat Some Acid, the Flowers' signature tune, presents this psychological methodology firmly in place: the lowing of the guitar and the tom-toms' menacing echo as those dynamite-laden trucks lumber up cliff roads in William Friedkin's #Sorcerer; the shouts and screams, sometimes rich, sometimes hoarse, as the sweaty psyches of the mortal men protest within the trucks. Meadowlands makes the mistake of eliminating vocals. Without the childhood conceit the Flowers make inchoate noise only, and while that's important to the world it's more richly expressed through the AMM and Borbetomagus material the duo draws from. Requests, a medley, finds them once again on firm quicksand. The Love Boat Theme flies merrily through the shredder. Hungry Like the Wolf gets a shriek treatment and a festooning of "f*ck" to make Courtney Love blush. These three pieces constitute the Flowers' first EP, Songs for Children; Bunny's second side contains the second EP, Now We Are Six, more the same and more the glory.
