For fans of the late Bob Berg, =Geneva Concert is a wonderful set performed on August 14, 1994, recorded eight years before the tenor saxophonist's untimely passing. The disc starts off in subtle fashion with a lengthy Summer Nights, 17 minutes and 17 seconds in fact, giving the Niels Lan Doky Trio plenty of space to provide a platform for Berg's acid jazz bursts to erupt from his instrument. The 31-year-old Doky looks like a child prodigy on the piano while Berg, at 43 years of age, was clearly in his prime and at the top of his game. Pierre Boussaguet's bass quietly works with Doky's keyboard runs, which are as impressive as Berg's sax. There's plenty of time inside Summer Nights where there's no sax at all -- just drummer Alvin Queen letting Boussaguet and Doky do their thing. And the trio generates a cabaret majesty, Berg rejoining them 13 minutes inside this piece, more restrained and complementary to the place where this song has traveled. In Forever Frank he plays the horn so hard that there's immediate sweat as he dips up and down, far more animated than the colleagues playing behind him. It's a riveting concert, the only flaw perhaps being the "public access TV" feel to the video. This is actually a professional shoot with Daniel Farhi producing under the direction of Patrick Savey, but live at Montreux it's not, so don't expect the cameras on cranes gathering impressive shots. However, because of the importance of the performance, it's taped well enough to be a real treasure. Inside the small New Morning Club you'll get a front-row shot from the audience, Doky's hands on the piano from a strange angle, and lots of fade-ins and double images, all recorded for a jazz and blues TV festival. There's also a "bonus track" of Nancy with the Laughing Face, which incorporates some video footage of Berg from a Farhi interview clip. That 17-minute clip has the saxophonist talking about his life in a comfortable setting, with rare photographs and imagery of the artist walking through the streets and on-stage.
