Ronin is a project led by Italian noise-rock guitarist Bruno Dorella (of OvO, among other bands). This first EP is superb: concise and conceptually focused. Here, Dorella takes a much more melodic and "clean" approach to music. These five instrumental songs all share a certain fascination with spaghetti western and tango. So there's a bit of Ennio Morricone, a bit of Astor Piazzolla, and a bit of Duane Eddy, all rolled into the melancholy typical to the post-rock/indie rock ethos. The Ronin Theme is actually exactly that, softly propelled by the note-by-note guitar motif andLorenzo Rizzi's accordion. Marco Anicio contributes discreet rhythm guitar. The rhythm section is handled by bassist Alessandro Ruppen and drummer Jacopo Andreini (also a saxophonist with the avant-rock group Bz Bz Ueu). For Nada, Dorella overdubbed a few guitar tracks to paint a bleak western landscape Mediterranean-style. Canzone d'Amore Moldava ("Moldavian love song") moves from tenderness to "circusness" -- this is the only moment where things get exciting enough to rock. The reprise of the Ronin Theme is more energetic than the first track. Simple, spirited and simply beautiful, this EP may be hard to get in North America but it will reward your efforts. ~ François Couture, Rovi
