Since repackaged on CD with the rest of the night's concert (previously available only on the separate Live, Vol. 1 vinyl), the Danny Adler Band's first live album was recorded in Switzerland in August 1982, with Adler joined by guitarist Mark Moesgaard-Kjeldsen, bassist Andy Lafone, and drummer Les Morgan. It's a powerful lineup and it must have been a phenomenal show; the seven songs on this album are those that closed the show itself, picking up precisely where Vol. 1 left off, and powering listeners through to a gripping finale. A Mach 10 retread of James Brown's The Scratch opens the album, just 50 seconds long but as vital as it ought to be, before a slam into the hand-jive rhythms of Gusha Gusha Woman, the Stonesy drive of Kiss It Goodbye, and all the way to an eight-minute ride with Cincinnati Fatback, probably Adler's best-known number, and still a fabulous distillation of all that makes him so magical. No less than Ghost Train Ride on Vol. 1, Cincinnati Fatback loads you on the loco and takes you where it will, and on this occasion, that's into the arms of an equally epic God on a Mudguard, another stone-cold Adler classic and a riotous end to the evening. There are no less than 18 Danny Adler albums available today, which is an awesome prospect for anyone who is just discovering his music. But the single CD that rounds up these two early-'80s live albums might well be the place to start. ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi
