This release contains three 3" CDs, one solo each by Wehowsky and Günter and one overt collaboration. Untitled Triptych is the collaboration and was created by the two artists exchanging sound materials and sequencing, followed by further rework and remix. It is a suite of three pieces that share Günter's interest in quiet and small sounds with Wehowsky's in repetition and transformation. Günter's solo piece, Deceptive Likeness (a phrase attributed to Morton Feldman and referring to the instrumental image and the perception of sound), ended up as the first draft to Günter's later release Slow Gestures. In the later version, he changed the pacing and harmony of the various events and modified the end slightly. He considers Slow Gestures to be the definitive version of the piece, and although it is interesting to see the transformation between the two versions, the later version is the more accomplished of the two. Although Maze is credited to Wehowsky solo, each of its three parts is related to Günter. The first section, with its alternating sound blocks, quotes some typical compositional methods. The second section, low drones and loud static bursts, started life as a recording of Günter "playing" a newspaper and his dog barking (one can judge the amount of transformation by seeking any sounds that even faintly resemble these sources in the piece). The final section is a primarily very quiet material based on samples from Günter's first CD, bounded by loud slabs of white noise static. The collection as a whole shows the different approaches to sound art by both Wehowsky and Günter, from Wehowsky's dynamic transformations to Günter's quiet presentation. ~ Caleb Deupree, Rovi
