One of France's most popular singers of the '70s/'80s, Gérard Lenorman returns -- 11 years after his last studio album, 2000's La Raison de l'Autre -- with Duos de Mes Chansons, which, as its title implies, attempts to introduce his much-loved work to a new audience with the aid of 13 guest vocalists. Assisted by producer Bertrand Lamblot, the Normandy star avoids the temptation to modernize his classic French chansons too much, with only the flamenco interpretation of Chico the Gypsies collaboration "Si Fuera Presidente (Si J'étais Président)," the Americana-tinged hook-up with Canadian Roch Voisine on "Le Petit Prince," and the Gallic jazz-pop treatment of the Zaz-featuring "La Ballade des Gens Heureux" drastically different from the originals. Instead, Lenorman opts for the subtle tinkering approach, substituting the fast-paced fingerpicking of "Le Funambule" for dramatic piano chords to produce a sound that fits in with Stanislas' usual classical pop output, adding a slight Middle Eastern-flavored twist to the Joyce Jonathan duet "Quelque Chose et Moi," and pushing the strings further into the mix on the orchestral reworking of the Florent Pagny-guesting "Si Tu N'Me Laisses Pas Tomber." With artists synonymous with the '80s (Maurane), '90s (Tina Arena), and 2000s (Shy'm), Duos de Mes Chansons only highlights the affection that artists from all generations have for Lenorman, and while his voice may not be what it was in his heyday, his charm certainly is. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
