Having begun her professional theater career starring in Willy Russell's musical +John, Paul, George Ringo and Bert in 1974, Barbara Dickson drew on that experience along with her expanding pop recording career for her tenth album, All for a Song. TV advertised it at the time -- by Epic, one of the most successful labels in the CBS group -- as a greatest-hits collection even though most of her success had come from outside the arena of the singles chart. All for a Song included two Beatles songs The Long and Winding Road and With a Little Help from My Friends, which is souped up with a backing beat and vocal chorus. It also featured her first single hit, a contemporary version of the song Answer Me, a number one hit in the 1950s for both Frankie Laine and David Whitfield; Another Suitcase in Another Hall, a song which she had taken to the Top 20 from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical +Evita; January February, the hit from her previous album, The Barbara Dickson Album; and the Mike Batt composed epic ballad Caravan Song. Dickson wrote the tracks Tonight and I Believe in You, which were two of the weaker songs on the album. The production is shared around with Dickson taking on both the Beatles numbers, Alan Tarney who was most famous for his work at that time with Cliff Richard producing his own composition, January February and also taking on an uptempo version of Will You Love Me Tomorrow, and Junior Campbell involved with the hit Answer Me, but the lions' share was reserved for Mike Batt who worked on both the songs written by Dickson as well as his own Caravan Song, Run Like the Wind, and the final track, Surrender to the Sun. ~ Sharon Mawer, Rovi
