This disc of live recordings was drawn from two spring 2004 European shows by David Lindley (strings and vocals) and Wally Ingram (percussion) during their tour supporting 2002's Twango Bango III. Immediately striking is the remarkably realistic sound, capturing all the nuance and subtle inflections traded between the crafty instrumentalists. Lindley's ardor for the Bayou simmers to the surface on the infectiously bluesy cover of Professor Longhair's Her Mind Is Gone. Few collaborators are able to create with such vigorous spontaneity as these two. They perpetually propel themselves into the melodies, rather than simply playing notes and keeping time, the net result of which is a much larger sound than one would expect from a duo. It had to be done and who better than Lindley to pen the perfect musical précis to the rigors of backstage food, which is done on the funky Catfood Sandwiches. Once again the tune and greasy beat have a definite Crescent City vibe, recalling the late '60s sides by the Meters. Equally as surreal is the ode to the couch potato When a Guy Gets Boobs, sporting some of the best picking from Lindley as Ingram establishes a rock-solid Chicago-style Boogie Chillun groove. An intelligible reading of Jerry Lee Lewis' Meatman -- which "the Killer" had to perform at a breakneck pace because the lyrics were considered too suggestive -- romps and stomps beneath a jaunty and rollicking rhythm. Lindley breaks out the five-string banjo for an optimistic and earthy rendition of the traditional folk song Little Sadie. Ingram's hand drumming gives the number an unshakable world music feel. Although the only place one can score Live!
