This is a very charming and occasionally haunting set. The music (first put out on this 1998 CD) matches veteran pianist Jimmy Rowles (three years before his passing) with his daughter, trumpeter Stacy Rowles (who gets first billing although she really is co-leader with her father), the late bassist Eric Von Essen, and drummer Joe LaBarbera. Jimmy Rowles' penchant for digging up obscure but superior songs is well showcased as the quartet performs such numbers as George Gershwin's Things Are Looking Up, and Isham Jones' "I Wouldn't Change You for the World," James P. Johnson's "Whisper Sweet" (when was the last time that song was performed?), Eddie Beal's "Softly" and Duke Ellington's "Lady in Doubt." The older Rowles has two vocals, including one on his somewhat demented "Devil Wind"; Stacy takes four, and the father and daughter team share the delightful "Me and the Moon." Although neither were virtuoso singers, they put plenty of swing, feeling and wit into their interpretations and make each piece quite memorable. The four instrumentals include Ellington's "Portrait of a Lion" and Eddie Higgins' "Wayning Moments," and find Stacy Rowles taking plenty of fine melodic solos, with Jimmy Rowles as usual managing to find the perfect chord for each situation and the sidemen supporting expertly.
