By mid-1967, The Four Seasons were releasing too many compilations and not enough new music. New Gold Hits (not to be confused with such predecessors as Golden Hits, More Golden Hits, Gold Vault of Hits, and 2nd Vault of Golden Hits) wasn't really a compilation, despite its title. It contained among its ten selections only three previously released songs, the Top Ten hit Tell It to the Rain (actually an alternate take from the single version), the Top 20 hit Beggin', and the latter's B-side, Dody. It led off with both sides of the simultaneously released single C'mon Marianne (another Top Ten hit) and its B-side Let's Ride Again, and Lonesome Road, credited to their pseudonymous group the Wonder Who?, would be released as a single shortly, backed with another LP track, Around and Around (Andaroundandaroundandaroundandaround). The other three songs, Good-Bye Girl, I'm Gonna Change, and The Puppet Song, also were newly recorded. Still, the disc felt patched together rather than constituting a coherent collection, and, of course, the title was utterly confusing. The group still was capable of turning out a timely single on schedule, but in the Sgt. Pepper era, more than that was required to maintain popularity. It would be another year and a half before The Four Seasons would try to compete by producing their concept album, The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette, and that would be too little, too late. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
