In 1964, after many tours with Louis Armstrong's All Stars, trombone player Trummy Young retired to Hawaii where he was to remain for the rest of his life, occasionally resurfacing for a gig or for a recording session. Someday was one result as Young entered the studio to cut this disc with old friends of like musical mind and talent. With this fine cast of players, Young demonstrates that he had lost none of the technique that allowed him to engage in torrid solos and wonderful melodic lines. The group produces more than 40 minutes of relaxed jam session playing as each song receives a thorough workout. For the veteran outfit, playing this music is as comfortable as putting on a favorite pair of slippers. Also, in a sense, this album is a short retrospective survey of Young's career. I'm Confessin recalls his beginnings with the Jimmie Lunceford band. Young's association with Louis Armstrong are remembered with a vocal on Armstrong's Someday and I'm Confessin. Struttin' With Some Barbecue showcases his superior traditional (aka Dixieland) trombone playing. The album's pièce de résistance is Duke Ellington's Creole Love Call mistitled Song in the album's play list. Each member of the group takes the opportunity to solo with especially good work done by Barney Bigard's clarinet, Pee Wee Erwin's open and muted trumpet, and Milt Hinton's bass. Unfortunately, there's nothing on the album that demonstrates Young's mastery with modern jazz idiom he displayed with such organizations as Boyd Raeburn's band. Nonetheless, this LP is a testimonial to the artistry of a foremost trombone player and is a good candidate for transfer to CD. ~ Dave Nathan, Rovi
