The German label Grob released Gert-Jan Prins's Live CD at the same time it released Keith Rowe's solo album Harsh. Funny thing is: Prins' one is harsher. More of an electrician than a musician (that is by no mean demeaning, it simply describes his work better), Prins works with self-made instruments dealing with signal conversion (optical TV signals to acoustic ones), radios, and TVs. His art resides in circuitry and manipulation as much as in interpretation and improvisation. He could be heard among the other musicians of the Music in Movement Electronic Orchestra (or MIMEO), but with this solo album, one can really experience his music. And it is harsh: It has the rough edges of Merzbow (but not the claustrophobic feel nor the extreme decibels) and the minimalist esthetics of late-1990 Otomo Yoshihide (projects like I.S.O. and Filament). Rhythm is often involved -- but don't think about dancing on Live. As ingenious Prins' devices are, his sound palette remains limited to static-gray. With the exception of the dynamically wider PM/PM, Live doesn't offer much variety and the listener quickly grows tired of this emotionless experience.
