Just how an uncompromisingly heavy and aggressive sludgecore monstrosity such as Cavity could have ever emerged from the sunny beaches of Miami, FL, remains a mystery, but one would have to be naïve not to realize that this city's golden facade hides a seedier, uglier reality behind every cardboard palm tree. Consider Cavity, then, to be the occasional piece of road kill found floating in Gloria Estefan's swimming pool. Indeed, driven by their crushing wall of feedback and the rage of singer Rene Barge screaming himself hoarse, the group's songs have always imparted a palpable sense of desperation, the type that cannot be contrived, but must come from personal experience. Fittingly adorned with minimalist artwork inspired by a good many Ennio Morricone spaghetti western soundtracks, 1997's Somewhere Between the Train Station and the Dumping Grounds achieves this very effect, offering a number of powerful, Sabbath-inspired riff pieces on standout cuts like Goin' Ann Arbor, Shake 'Em Down, and Open Transom. The album's final five songs (recorded at Fordham University's WFMU studios) fall somewhat short of the band's usual high standards, partly because their stripped-down live versions adhere much more closely to straight-up hardcore, partly because the sound quality just ain't all that great. Still, between the memorable slow-tempo bridge of Burning My Eyes and the unmistakable Slayer tribute drum patterns employed in final feedback-fest, Chase, these hardly serve to sink the album altogether.
