A classic pop sound in the vein of Tom Petty and the BoDeans, this live performance is short on soundboard quality but long on musicianship. The roots rock of the opening Changeless has a lovable guitar jangle as singers Bobby Sutliff and Tim Lee deliver sweet yet earthy harmonies. The extended guitar solo closing the song could be mistaken for Mike Campbell's virtuosity. New Red Shoes is a mid-tempo classic pop/rock arrangement but loses some of its shine in the varying sound levels. There is a definite '60s pop influence in the songs, resembling the folk-rock of the Byrds. Selecting songs from various albums and EPs, the band sounds extremely tight and polished, particularly on standouts such as I Never Thought and You Never Give Up. Given the appropriate hoots and hollers, it's obvious the crowd appreciated the performance that night. One song that doesn't quite live up is the Tom Verlaine-penned Glory. The track seems a bit aimless despite the best of intentions during the chorus. It does feature some fine solo work though, with Sutliff and Lee trading guitar licks. Highlights on the album are frequent, but Stupid Idea has to be the crème de la crème. Despite being one of the shortest songs in the set, it has everything going for it in terms of arrangement and buildup. The galloping pace on the Velvet Underground cover What Goes On is a bit flat, but is a passable effort. The band picks eclectic covers, including Alex Chilton's Hey! Little Child, the performance of which is a mix of rock but also the first hint of soul in the set list. Closing with So You Want to Be a Rock Roll Star, the band deserved a far better fate.
