Pam Bricker is a versatile singer, comfortable with modern jazz, pop, and cabaret. She is also a linguistic expert of sorts, having the ability to sing in four languages. Bricker has been a member of Mad Romance, a vocal quartet based in Washington, D.C., as well as a solo artist. On this album she pairs with the quartet's arranger, Rick Harris, on an album obviously designed to emphasize Bricker's versatility. The cuts are a combination of studio and live recordings. The kickoff tune is one of the most novel on the album; performed a cappella, Bricker sings the lyrics while Harris' wordless vocalizing provides the "instrumental" backing. They then combine to present a seminar in various forms of wordless vocalizing from straight scat to jazz yodeling à la Leon Thomas. Fortunately, the rest of the program reveals that Bricker and Harris are wise enough to recognize that these border on gimmickry and wear thin quickly, and Bricker goes on to prove that she is an all-purpose singer. From a Brazilian bent on My Little Boat to a jazzy and pretty It Could Happen to You to Randy Weston's bop piece Hi-Fly (where she gets some excellent piano backing by guest Dave Kane), the singer touches all the bases. Bricker's vocal stylings run from serious scatting (Hi-Fly), to sweet (All of You), to acerbic and playful (Another Song About Paris). But the singer has no monopoly on being multifaceted, as her cohort Harris plays piano, trumpet, and flügelhorn, and vocalizes in a light but pleasant voice. They join to do a fun Jackie Roy thing on Will You Still Be Mine. Bruce Swaim and his tenor appear on a couple of cuts, being especially effective on Harris' Guido's Lament. The remaining musical characters are equally compelling in their support. This is a happy, fun session and worth searching for. ~ Dave Nathan, Rovi
