MF Doom and Scienz of Life have been down since their days at Bobbito's Fondle ‘Em label in the 1990s with Doom providing beats for the group's 2002 release Project Overground: The Scienz Experiment and Lil Sci and ID 4 Winds appearing on the producer's King Geedorah project, Take Me to Your Leader. And it goes without saying that alter egos and MC characters are right up Doom's alley, so when Lil Sci emerged with the alias John Robinson, MF's involvement was a no-brainer. On the clever concept album, Who Is This Man?, the two underground artists work together to paint a portrait of John Robinson, a mysterious conman known to seduce women out of their savings and described as "a highly-organized sociopath and sensitive human being." Lil Sci works his laid-back conversational flow over 13 finely crafted tracks by the legendary beatsmith, built on dusty jazz and soul samples married with crisp drum arrangements. On There She Goes, Doom combines a familiar sample of Ramsey Lewis's Julia with hard-thump breakbeat drums while Sci narrates a chance romantic encounter. Indy 102 sees the veteran lyricist running down a list of dos and don'ts for survival in the indie rap game.
