Real Jazz for Real People is as curious a jazz collection as has ever been assembled. With its generic presentation, it feels more like an informal mixtape than anything else, and perhaps it is. Compiled by the very savvy and knowledgeable Keb Darge and Bob Jones, it's a curiously modern set, but with deep leanings on Latin, soul, and funk-jazz -- not fusion. The sounds here come from everyone from Lionel Hampton to longtime Miles Davis drummer Al Foster, from Allen Toussaint (who does Tequila!) to Joe Bataan (covering Deodato!), from Earl Washington to the Fat Albert Orchestra (Herbie Hancock and pals). The one thing that's a "for sure" across all 25 cuts is that everything here grooves like mad. Whether it's Yambu's Hippopotamus, the Soul Society's drum-heavy read of Lee Morgan's Sidewinder, Music Inc.'s Abscretions, or the Birds of Paradise doing Jesse Belvin's Bossa Blue Port, the result is the same. This is one of those compilations that can fuel any party or serious jazz listening session, and is nonstop in its beat quotient. Remarkable and burning. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
