Because the Jones Girls were a female trio that recorded for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International label in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they were inevitably compared to the Three Degrees. And, to be sure, the Three Degrees influenced them along the way, but the Jones Girls were also heavily influenced by the Emotions. The bottom line is that they were an appealing RB group in their own right, and their blend of sweetness and grit was the epitome of Northern soul. Recorded at Philly's legendary Sigma Sound in 1980, At Peace With Woman was their second album for Philadelphia International and boasts some of the sisters' best work. The playful I Just Love the Man and the perky Dance Turned Into a Romance, both written by Gamble Huff, were major hits -- and the Jones Girls are equally impressive on album tracks that range from the nostalgic Back in the Day to an inspired cover of the Stylistics' Children of the Night. Although the trio didn't record a lot of message songs at Philadelphia International, the title song is a philosophical gem that addresses the battle of the sexes and asserts that serious social problems will continue to plague the world unless men and women learn to get along better.
