Following in the footsteps of pioneering stoner rock label Man's Ruin Records, Meteor City did their part to keep the split stoner EP tradition alive in 1999 with this eight-song collection from Unida and Dozer. Fronted by former Kyuss vocalist John Garcia, Unida unleashed this, their second set of recorded material to the delight of stoner fans everywhere, many of which were slightly disappointed with Garcia's first post-Kyuss outfit, Slo Burn. While Dozer's contribution to the disc is decent enough, it's Garcia and Unida who really shine. Garcia's voice is in great form, and the material is muscular -- recalling, but not equaling Kyuss' excessive and bottom-heavy dirge. The singer's tendency toward vague and pointless lyricism barely blemishes the pungent Red, and the remaining Unida tracks are as close to flawless as desert rock can get in a post-Kyuss universe. Dozer seem to be mining the same influences as Unida on the disc's latter half, but the group can't contend with Garcia and company, especially with the frontman in such fine vocal form. ~ Vincent Jeffries, Rovi
