Released just four months after their breakthrough second album, Now This I Have to Hear, Dublin rap duo Messiah J the Expert's ...And Another Thing is a ten-track mini-album comprising, in equal parts, old B-sides and freshly recorded material. Fans of the album will not be too surprised by the mix of material on offer, but less expected is the quality of the supposedly lesser material. There are the bright and jazzy A Tribe Called Quest-like productions and more sinister Nas-aping arrangements that, for whatever reason, were deemed unfit for inclusion on Now This I Have to Hear, as well as more immediate pop numbers like Not What I Planned and single Superfamous Supertune. There is also a side to ...And Another Thing that clearly wasn't represented on the album, from the festive Middle Eastern pop melodies of I'd Give My Right Arm to the elegant classical touches that dot tracks like One Bedroom Apartment, Accidental Genius, and Ever Forwards, Never Backwards. Instrumental Ever Forwards, Never Backwards is both subdued and epic in scope, at times calling to mind the futuristic ambience of Gorillaz cohort Dan the Automator. Singalong highlight Bone Collector captures the pair's penchant for the surreal, as the Expert laces Messiah J's grave-digging memoirs with comical owl hoots; One Bedroom Apartment samples the classic blues Stormy Weather, using Mozart-like piano embellishments to add a sense of menace to its tale of the dark personal lives of Batman and Superman. Though not as cohesive or as consistently strong as its predecessor, ...And Another Thing is as strong a set of songs as any produced in hip-hop during 2007. ~ Dave Donnelly, Rovi
