Compiled by Seven Davis, Jr., an artist with a distinctive style mixing house with left-field R&B, Future Society showcases several similarly minded, lesser-known artists. There's no geographic focus to this collection; Davis has toured across the globe, and artists here originate from New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. While most of the artists haven't received much exposure outside of their respective scenes, some of them have been around for a while, and have collaborated with well-known musicians. For example, Irish producer Colm K has worked with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, held down a renowned club residency, and appeared on Boiler Room. Most of the tracks here are laid-back, joyous house, with smooth, sensuous chords and feel-good melodies. Some of them, particularly Ügly Disco's "Nutz," play around with effects and loops without getting too abstract. OCnotes' "My Religion" surrounds a driving, fill-heavy drumbeat with several shades of ear-tickling synths that buzz and bubble. While tracks like Cave Circles' "Living with Everyone" are shadowy and introverted, Jonna Samwell's "Alright" is much more open and inviting, with funky keyboard licks and soulful vocals welcoming you home. The R&B tunes are all quite different, ranging from the jazzy live band soul of I, CED to the bizarre gospel-inflected miniatures by Clark the Community. The compilation's vinyl release substitutes one of the Clark the Community tracks for a slinky, abstract neo-soul number by former THEESatisfaction member SassyBlack. The release flows together really well as an album; it never feels like a cobbled-together collection of demos by unknowns. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
