By 1979, 37-year-old singer, actor, and television host John Davidson had two periods of modest success as a recording artist, first with half a dozen chart albums on Columbia Records between 1966 and 1969, and second with the easy listening chart hit Everytime I Sing a Love Song and a couple of follow-ups on 20th Century in 1976-1977. Just now, his career was in something of a lull, with only a couple of TV movies and a supporting role in the film #The Concorde: Airport '79 to show for the last couple of years. Thus, this independent label recording at least kept his oar in as a singer, even if it had little chance for commercial success. Davidson essayed a mix of old songs that included lesser known 1930s hits such as Then I'll Be Tired of You and I'll Take Romance; songs from 1960s musicals such as Once in a Lifetime (#Stop the World -- I Want to Get off) and I Want to Be with You (#Golden Boy); and '50s and '60s pop hits like the title song, Run to Him, and I Wish You Love. Davidson's singing reflected his ever-boyish appearance; it was eager and earnest, and if, in its clarity and rhythmic directness, it suggested Vic Damone and Robert Goulet, it never had their authority. There are several ways to view John Davidson's career as a singer. One is to say that, with his light, pre-rock style, he simply came along too late; another is to say that he spread himself too thin, especially by spending so much time in television, to become a big success in music. But it simply may be that Davidson was a sturdy minor talent who took the opportunities offered to him, one of which was to record this pleasant album. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
