This record sold enormously in Norway, but sadly it never made much of an impact internationally. Every commercially successful pop record must necessarily have a number of things going for it, perhaps most importantly it needs to have catchy tunes. Jeans for Onassis sure is packed with them, most notably the fine hit singles Propaganda, Wide Awake, and Cellophane Eyes, but also several strong album tracks like Berlin and Hey Harvey. Not every smash hit album needs to be this smart, though. The group's sound on this remarkable debut is cool. It's quite literally cool because of the icy, effects-heavy synthesizer and guitar arrangements and singer Lise Karlsnes' detached delivery, singing of asphalt beaches, electro boys, and cellophane eyes. And, of course, it is credibly cool because it consciously harks back to Berlin-era Bowie and thus plays deliberately with urban rock hipness. With a suave frontwoman like Karlsnes, a clever pop songwriter like Bjørn Bergene and a fine record to promote, one is compelled to wonder why this album wasn't an international hit. Was it the rather unappealing band name -- for some reason named in honor of a humdrum Oslo suburb? The tackier-than-thou sleeve? The '80s sound just before it was back in vogue again? Alas, one may never know. What is known is that it is a great sounding record that still can be thoroughly enjoyed by mainstream fans and music affectionados alike. Highly recommended for anyone into stylish and intelligent, commercial pop in the vein of, say, the Cardigans, Blondie, or Garbage. ~ Anders Kaasen, Rovi
