Following up D. I. Go Pop would be a tall order for anyone showing how Disco Inferno kept topping each previous milestone ever more commandingly, but Second Language is simply perfect -- four songs that never fail to thrill and touch. The title track, according to Crause in contemporaneous interviews, was partially inspired by the Durutti Column and the Chameleons (namely, such bands' majestic guitar beauty and energy). Rather than simply recreate such sound, Disco Inferno hot-wire it, with Crause's guitar/sampler combination running rampant. Harps, spiraling piano loops, Wilmot's clean bass, Whatley's crisp percussion, and more all build through the song until Crause fully cuts loose with a soaring solo that leaves everything the Edge ever tried to do in the dust. The Atheist's Burden is relatively more restrained in comparison: low synth pulses start things off, with guitars scraping and surging on the sides rather than up front until the song's final minute, but still with a fine feeling to it. At the End of the Line is a cold, clear wonder of a tune, with gorgeous electric guitar raining down from above as bass anchors the rhythm, and Crause's ruminative, stark lyric is delivered with quiet confidence. A Little Something is as close the band ever got to a fun rave-up, and even this was still very much Disco Inferno. Unexpected mixing levels, Crause singing in the same soft, questioning style about being "taught a little song to only sing when things were going horribly wrong," samples everywhere, loveliness and confusion all at once characterize the song.
