With the Sun the Moon's self-titled debut, vocalist/bassist Mark Burgess wanted to disengage himself from the neo-psychedelic rock of his earlier band, the Chameleons. If the album was to be judged upon Burgess' intentions, then it couldn't be viewed as a success; The Sun the Moon is fueled by the swirling, ethereal guitars that characterized the the Chameleons' sound. However, this album is not a leftover. Instead, Burgess, ex-Chameleons drummer John Lever, and guitarists Andy Whitaker and Andy Clegg have refined the original model; this is an intelligent, gripping concept album that easily outshines their body of work. The album is about a man reflecting on his life and the madness of the world around him. Spiraling guitars illuminate The Speed of Life, wherein Burgess finds solace in the bittersweet years of his adolescence: "yes I recall/such pure and precious memories/dreaming of the things/that never came to be." In the spellbinding Death of Imagination, Burgess rails against the suppression of creativity while Whitaker and Clegg's driving riffs dazzle the senses. Lyrics drunk on poetic imagery stimulate the mind while Burgess and his companions conjure otherworldly landscapes with dreamy, enchanting rock.
