In the early '60s, John Zacherley released a novelty song, Cameo Records' Dinner With Drac, Pt. 1. As Zacherley was the Cool Ghoul, host of a TV show in New York City on WPIX, channel 11, one can understand the song being a regional hit in the NY/Connecticut area. About a decade and a half later, a band with the registered name Children of the Night released this equally dreadful album with no relation to the aforementioned disc, but utilizing the same title, Dinner With Drac, on Pickwick's PIP Records label. Recorded in Abington, MA, the individuals involved -- producer Geoffrey Black, writer Richie Stevens, and songwriter/cover designer Ritch Barnes -- made no noise on the blossoming Boston scene. Crediting Count Dracula on lead guitar; Wolfman on drums; the Mummy playing sax and flute; bassist Frankenstein's monster, Igor the Hunchback, on keyboards (wasn't it Ygor?); and guitar by Dr. Jekyll with alter ego Mr. Hyde on trumpet, the album is aimed at the children's market, much in the same way that Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine was sold to adolescents while the core readers were fantasy film fans more interested in stories on Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff than the dumb captions over horror movie stills. Half the tracks are songs performed by a mediocre band; the rest of the LP is tired "horror humor," with the skits in between the music in need of some solid writing. Where this album could have had some merit is if those involved took a hint from Somerville, MA's Bobby Boris Pickett. His Monster Mash was "the hit of the land" and worthy of immortality. After spinning this disc a few times there is really nothing to be said for it -- except, if you've got kids it might amuse them. If you're looking for some serious music, avoid at all costs.
