While a bunch of crummy-sounding live tapes of San Francisco proto-punks Crime have surfaced over the years -- and a few of them found their way onto the memorably titled but sonically miserable collection Hate Us or Love Us, We Don't Give a Fuck -- it's good to know that a halfway decent-sounding document of Crime's frantic stage shows has finally surfaced. Refurbished with the help of original guitarist Johnny Strike, Cadillac Faggot was taken from a recording of a gig at San Fran's Mabuhay Gardens; while Strike says in his liner notes that he's not certain of the date, it was probably recorded December 8, 1978, since tapes circulate of a show for that evening with the same set list, and the same lineup of the band was on board for this show. Crime sounds even less subtle here than on the demo collection San Francisco's Doomed, and the audio is a bit smeary and overloaded, but the vocals and instruments are all audible and the performance is fast, loose, and brimming with energy. A few previously uncirculated songs also appear, and if not all of 'em are classics, Rat Rhythm generates a healthy head of steam and the cover of the Velvet Underground's Real Good Time Together is appropriately ominous. While still not a substitute for the album Crime never got to make, Cadillac Faggot at least offers more evidence of why the band still matters to folks over two decades after calling it quits.
