On Global Citizen, EP 1, Coldplay assumed a new identity as Los Unidades, recruiting a handful of unexpected collaborators to inspire, unify, and rouse with world music-inspired anthems in support of the Global Poverty Project. Despite the seemingly jarring collision of artists, these are Coldplay songs at heart, simply embellished with beats, rhythms, and guest vocals by contributors such as Cassper Nyovest, Jess Kent, Jozzy, and even a sampled Nelson Mandela. Chris Martin's vocals tie the affair together, his earnest delivery allowed full license to be as free and playful as possible. Jonny Buckland's familiar guitar noodling provides further backbone, especially on "Timbuktu," which sees U.K. grime emcee Stormzy drop a motivating verse, and later on the propulsive "Voodoo," a Head Full of Dreams-esque team effort where the band is joined by Nigerian singers Tiwa Savage and Wizkid, Venezuelan musician Danny Ocean, and producers David Guetta and Stargate. Listeners oblivious to the band's post-Viva la Vida output might be confused by Global Citizen, but this four-track project is a natural extension of the pop, hip-hop, and world sounds with which Coldplay has been experimenting for years. Pushing the joyous energy captured during their Head Full of Dreams era and imbuing fresh sounds, as Los Unidades, they take this chance to explore outside the confines of the Coldplay name while also using that brand to raise funds for a worthy cause. ~ Neil Z.
