Kasim Sulton is best known as the bassist (and as one of four vocalists) for the Todd Rundgren-led prog/new wave band of the '70s and '80s, Utopia, but he also released a solo album in 1982, titled simply Kasim. In between work as a hired gun and studio musician over the years (playing on Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell and often touring with Meat Loaf, plus spots with Joan Jett, Celine Dion, Indigo Girls, Steve Stevens, etc.), Sulton has kept on demoing solo compositions, and his 1998 release, The Basement Tapes, compiles 11 such songs from over the years for guitarist Earl Slick's label, Slick Music. The music is very reminiscent of Utopia's post-1980 direction -- very catchy power pop with anthemic choruses. In fact, most of the tracks would have fit perfectly on such classic Utopia albums as Adventures in Utopia, Utopia, and POV. Standouts include such up-tempo numbers as the album opener, Rather Be Blind, This Must Be Love, Woman, and Rock Roll Ricochet, plus the ballads In the Name of Love and All the Right Reasons. With Utopia not having issued an all-new studio album since the mid-'80s, The Basement Tapes could be the closest longtime fans get to a new set of Utopia-esque tracks. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
