Not only is the name of the group well nigh unpronounceable (it, in fact, derives from the Latin "ignotum per ignotius"), so are the seven track titles of this, Nmperign's fourth album. Without the input of percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani (who plays on the first Nmperign album, 44'38, and guests on their second on Twisted Village), the guest appearances of Philip Gelb on shakuhachi and the inspired electronics of Jason Lescalleet (who also appears on the second album and features prominently on the Intransitive release In Which the Silent Film Director Can No Longer Make His Point With the Industrial Dreamer), this eponymous album is on paper at least the purest distillation of the music made by the singular Boston-based improvising duo of Bhob Rainey (soprano saxophone) and Greg Kelley (trumpet). And it's not ambient music for your dinner parties. At low volume, there doesn't sound to be much going on at all, but pay attention and a whole micro-world of nervous flutterings, clickings, and half-muffled yelps comes into focus (along with various strands of ambient noise picked up by ultra-sensitive microphones...passing cars, amp hums, even a low-flying aircraft). Rainey and Kelley know each other's moves very well, and when things get busy, the result is as exciting as a martial arts bout. Aficionados of ghost tracks (every album has to have one these days) will love the burst of wild applause that crashes in four minutes after the last track ends -- an ironic glance toward the 5000-seater concert halls music as uncompromising as this will probably never be heard in. ~ Dan Warburton, Rovi
