On their third outing, Nurse With Wound's Steve Stapleton and Current 93's David Tibet offer up more bizarre soundscapes that owe more to Stapleton's Nurse With Wound project than Tibet's Current 93. I Left Her For a Cartoon Octopus consists of low generator drones with occasional sudden sporadic bursts of sounds. The piece slowly morphs and finally dies down into cricket chirps. The Fire of the Mind is quite similar to the material on the first album, Sadness of Things, a continuous cosmic keyboard drone out of the Klaus Schulze catalog, with little noises in the background. When a clanging, echo-dosed guitar joins in, it sounds almost like some early Ash Ra Tempel outtake. The last two tracks are revamped versions of the two pieces from Stapleton and Tibet's second CD, Musical Pumpkin Cottage, with the effects more exaggerated in places, as if the versions from the other album weren't weird enough. The Dead Side of the Moon begins more suddenly with a short punchy drum solo, and ends with Tibet's voice heavily processed over another amorphous soundscape. The first half of Bubblehead is darker and more dramatic than the other version, and towards the end it becomes very surreal as the electronics, effects, and other instruments swirl dementedly around Tibet's poetic vocal delivery. Another incredible release from this duo, and with four LP-side-long tracks instead of two, it takes better advantage of the CD format. ~ Rolf Semprebon, Rovi
