This CD is a compilation of two Storyville LPs first issued in the early 1980s. The first five tracks come from a meeting of Clark Terry with Jesper Thilo's working group. Terry is magical on muted trumpet with the tenor saxophonist in a spry take of Sunday, and Ben Webster's loping Did You Call Her Today? (a reworking of In a Mellow Tone, which was in turn based upon Rose Room). Thilo salutes Webster with his lush playing of Stardust, while Frog Eyes, Terry's expressive blues tribute to Webster, has some magical vocal-like muted trumpet. Pianist Kenny Drew leads the potent rhythm section. It's unfortunate that the decision was made to truncate this session, as three songs were omitted in order to combine it with the other date. The other session is a straight-ahead quartet led by Thilo, with Drew again leading the rhythm section. While the lack of an additional horn as a foil means there is a little less variety, Thilo still shines, with a romp through Just One of Those Things and Cherokee. The surprising choice is Rose Room, the piece all but ignored in favor of its aforementioned musical descendant. Drew contributed the lush 'Ballad for Jesper. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
