Unquestionably the most entertaining, genre-mashing effort from the Bay Area since Mr. Bungle's first album, No Hesitation is lightning captured in a bottle, or rather on disc. Indeed, the presence of DJs Disk and Extrakd, not to mention Eddie Def, makes this even more of a creative blast; it's hip-hop not interested in following rules, with beats and riffs careening all over the place. Connections could be made to the more squiggly side of the Parliament/Funkadelic empire, thanks to Eddie Def's use and abuse of the vocoder especially, but this is modern music where rhythms and layers shift in cut-up style. Primus' Brain goes off on the drums, holding down the beats better than most hip-hop producers could and adding just the right spice where needed -- his blasting, distorted work on Brah kicks it out in amazing fashion. Both DJs sound up to full speed and then some, sci-fi samples and haunting keyboard melodies floating through the strange, unsettling chaos. More than once their work causes jaw-drops, like the stuttering collapses and sudden drop-ins on Reef-Ill. Buckethead isn't as prominent as might be thought in terms of straight up fret board action, but there's little doubt he's behind any number of the more unidentifiable sonics per song, while the occasional clear performance stands out, as on Igloo Condo. Unsurprisingly, El Stew mixed the album together song for song, letting everything go as it does. Standout songs are legion -- Surf Mission (Invasion of the Duck Punk) especially needs to be heard, beginning with a collage of weird samples before a tender, dissipated voice says "Let the biting begin/or we'll separate your ball sac." Then Brain's massive beats hit and they're off and running. Anyone who got off on the Dr. Octagon albums needs this just as badly, if not more so. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi
