It's hard to understand why this group went virtually ignored by the U.K. press (and U.S. record labels). Goya Dress is ten times more interesting, unique, talented, and fresh than all that banal nostalgia crowned "Britpop." Even recording for the hip label that spawned Suede didn't help. No one there is interested in you unless you shamelessly turn storied giants such as the Beatles, Kinks, Small Faces, T. Rex, Bowie, Wire, Blondie, or the Stranglers upside down to scoop up the petty change that falls from their talented pockets. Astrid Williamson possesses one of the most remarkable and beautiful voices in all the universe, and the breath in her style is a true pleasure, doubly so since she and her rhythm section create textural backgrounds using piano, horns, woodwinds, strings, and the usual drums and bass. All nine songs they've released thus far (don't miss their previous EPs, Bedroom Cinema and Ruby) have been super-accomplished and supremely different from each other, giving full range to Williamson's gifts, and hey, John Cale is a splendid choice in producer here! The B-side, To All My Girlfriends, is the standout. This is what the Sundays should have been. Gorgeous, gorgeous. ~ Jack Rabid, Rovi
