Rapper/producer Baby Keem's name graced some high-profile productions in the late 2010s, including work with Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and even an appearance on the soundtrack for Disney's live-action Lion King remake. With his own songs, Keem embraced versatility and a lyrical persona that was flip, funny, and at times antagonistic. Die for My Bitch is the strongest collection of his various approaches, with songs largely focused on destructive habits, toxic romance, and the never-ending pursuit of money and fame. Baby Keem takes a different inroad to these topics on almost every song, moving from woozy, detached R&B undertones on "Honest" to aggressive trap rock on "Moshpit" (which features a bizarre moment where Keem repeats the lyrics "I am 50 Cent, bro" in an ominous haze of reverb), acoustic guitar grunge rap on "My Ex," and back to more conventional rap styles on the textural, electric piano-driven "Orange Soda." Beats switch up regularly and every song goes in a slightly different direction than the last. Throughout the various directions Die for My Bitch takes, Baby Keem keeps irreverent fun as the top priority. The production is lively and imaginative, and Keem's lyrics are knowingly ridiculous enough to keep things interesting. Occasional moments of absurdity sit nicely with the more straightforward elements of the mixtape, and the grab-bag feel of the various ideas colliding just serves to make the project an enjoyable, low-stakes listen. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
