One of the legends of the early-'60s British blues boom and, famously, the Rolling Stones' dream drummer before they realized they couldn't afford him, Carlo Little played with a who's who of period wannabes before retiring from the music industry and essentially slipping from view. By the late '90s, he was making his living selling hot dogs, and had just set up his stall outside the Stones' latest stadium gig when he was recognized and drawn back into the fray. In 1999 the Carlo Little All-Stars started playing around the U.K. blues circuit, and the following year they went into the studio to cut this set. And, of course, they brought some guests along. It is sad, but inevitable, that the names of Ron Wood, Art Wood, and Long John Baldry are displayed almost as prominently on the cover as Little's own. But there is no decrying their contributions to the album. The basic combo of Rick Brown, Geraint Watkins, Alex Chanter, and Eddie Armer, plus the legendary Chanter Sisters on backing vocals (check your old Roxy Music albums!), blazes away throughout. But Baldry's vocals on Mystery Train and Iko Iko are solid gold, while the Wood brothers merge magnificently on Midnight Special, before taking solo turns on Country Line Special and Chicago Calling, and the entire album feels like dipping into Any Subterranean Club, Any London Suburb, circa 1963-1964, leaning back against the wall and letting the music just wash over you. It's an electrifying disc, and a fitting tribute to one of the era's most infuriatingly unsung heroes. ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi
