Austrian turntablist Dieb13, aka Dieter Kovacic, released its first solo CD in late 2000. Restructuring contains two 30-minute live improvisations. Formlos was recorded at Musikprotokoll in October 1999. Progressing in sections, the piece is set as a collage of many source vinyls. Noisy in a way that recalls Otomo Yoshihides work in the seminal band Ground Zero, Dieb13 doesn't seem to fiddle with techniques and vinyl preparation as much as Christian Marclay or Martin Tétreault, but rather concentrated on juxtaposition, speed variation, and odd sonic chance encounters. His concern for textured sound collage is even more obvious on Restructuring (recorded in September 2000) on which he uses vinyl versions of concerts played by fellow experimentalists Rupert Huber, Christian Fennesz, Bernhard Lang, Brian Ferneyhough, Marina Rosenfeld, and Salvatore Sciarrino at Musikprotokoll 1999, intertwining each of these highly creative musics into an impressive piece of vinyl that shares some of Claus van Bebber's esthetic views. Dieb13's music is not radical or extreme as Tétreault's can be at times. It relies on surprising meetings and it works. More accessible and significant than his work in Printer and Efzeg, Restructuring is the first real exhibition of Dieter Kovacic's talent. ~ François Couture, Rovi
