In the early '70s, Larry Raspberry left his band, the (Keep on Dancing) Gentrys, to form what would become a Memphis mini-institution, the Highsteppers. Loaded to the gills with talent galore, great tunes, and fronted by a man who was absolutely fearless when it came time to mount the stage, Larry the Highsteppers were a musical force to be reckoned with. They were sassy, crude, raw, swinging, diverse, eclectic, funny, musical, and best of all, they didn't sound like anybody else. And even though they were from laid-back Memphis, they had a competitive spirit like a Detroit band that could mop the floor up with any combo that came across their path. They also had the unfortunate luck to have this -- their debut album -- released on Stax Records just as that label was going out of business. But their fans and friends never deserted them, which makes the second coming of this LP more of a "by popular demand" item than just your garden variety reissue. This album was loaded with potential hits, and a second listening to numbers like Rock and Roll Warning, Jive Ass, Fool in Cheap Clothing, and Tonite makes you respect Raspberry's writing abilities just that much more. Jimmy Buffett fans will also note that Raspberry's harp man was none other than Greg Fingers Taylor, longtime J.B.'s band cohort, who positively shines on the rockin' instrumental Dixie Diner.
