Once again, some intrepid indie has released one of the key artifacts of the New York Dolls' live repertoire: their fabled 1974 gig in Paris, where they were received like heroes despite their homeland's lukewarm reception to the band's second album, Too Much Too Soon. Radio Luxembourg broadcast the Paris show, so unlike many semi-authorized live Dolls discs, the audio here is professional, though hardly perfect, since David Johansen's vocals often fade into the background under the assault of Johnny Thunders' guitar. This also captures the Dolls on a good but not great night, with the band sounding just a bit winded in spots (let's chalk it up to jet lag), and though their legendary sloppiness is under better control than on the average Dolls live tape, that's not to say they don't get lost every once in a while (and Johansen seems to forget to step up to the mike for the first verse of "Looking for a Kiss"). But if you want an idea what it must have been like to have witnessed this band on-stage during their brief heyday, If It's Saturday, This Must Be Paris does the job, documenting Johansen's rough but engaging vocal flash, the underrated guitar combo of Thunders and Syl Sylvain, and the dirt-simple but exciting rhythm section of Arthur Kane and Jerry Nolan, all before drugs, ennui, and bad judgment brought this great band down. This isn't the first release of the 1972 Paris show, and it probably won't be the last, but Dolls fans should have it in their collection in one of its many guises, and If It's Saturday, This Must Be Paris certainly fills the bill. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
