O'Connell grew up in Palmyra, Indiana, where he became infatuated with metal drumming, practicing in the family garage in his spare time. On occasion, he and his brothers Joe (Elephant Micah) and Greg would record music on a four-track tape machine. After he got his driver's license, O'Connell got involved with the punk and hardcore scene of Louisville, Kentucky and joined his first bands. That led to working on writing his own songs. His college years included a six-month program in Budapest, Hungary, where he continued to piece together songs with the aid of a borrowed guitar as well as music electronics from the Kitchen Budapest arts and tech collective. In 2011, O'Connell made his way to Asheville, North Carolina to work for Moog Music, where he calibrated and built synthesizers and tested vintage analog delay chips for his day job. Off the clock, he built homemade synths and continued to work on songs that would culminate in his sparse and meditative debut, 2021's Half Mirror. With custom synths, electric guitar, and tape delay among its primary components, it was recorded at home after relocating east to Raleigh and released on Western Vinyl. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
