Biography
Originally an acoustic guitarist playing in a variety of jazz funk bands in Bristol, Finian Greenhall found himself swung to electronic music in the early nineties during a spell at University where he met one Lee Jones. Following some folk influenced tracks, the pair recorded an ambient breakbeat album which eventually surfaced on Kickin Records in 1995 under the EVA moniker. Ninja Tune licensed a track and asked the pair to submit demos, Greenhall signing to the label shortly afterwards while Jones went on to record as Hefner for the respected Inertia imprint. Although originally signed on the strength of a proto jungle track, Greenhall went on to create his own sound spending a quiet couple of years at Ninja Tune subsidiary N-Tone releasing the Finkfunk and Frontside EP's for the label in 1997 and 1999 respectively before finally making waves in the early months of 2001 with his Ever Since I Was A Kid single, which provided the first taste of his debut album by way of sleepy eyed synths that backed a vocal sample neatly capturing the condition medically known as turntablism - No matter how many records I get I'm never going to be satisfied. This is like being a junky – stated the record. Entitled Fresh Produce, the subsequent album was eager to defy categorisation, twitching between genres in an attempt to encompass all forms of music. While the opening Tubb Journey saw soft keys and post-d&b programming step from a dub intro before collapsing in a dusty heap of electro, the curiously titled Bristol Switch, saw opposing loops mash together in an curious fusion of hip hop and r&b. ~ Kingsley Marshall, Rovi
