Sonya Hunter
Biography
A uniquely gifted singer/songwriter, Sonya Hunter bridges the chasm between traditional-style folk music and indie rock. Although an acoustic guitar-wielding singer who has done versions of traditional folk songs, the San Francisco-based Hunter has consistently recorded for rock-oriented indie labels in the U.S. and Europe and most often records with a full band. She's like the link between Cordelia's Dad and Aimee Mann.
Hunter first appeared on a handful of Bay Area compilations in the early '90s, most notably 1990's AIDS benefit Acoustic Music Project, featuring Hunter's best early song, the simply gorgeous Paint. That song also appears on her first album, 1991's Favorite Short Stories. Hunter then spent the rest of the decade shuttling between San Francisco and Germany; her next several albums, including 1993's Geography, 1995's Peasant Pie and live-in-the-studio retrospective Finders Keepers, and 1998's Headlights and Other Constellations, were all released on German labels. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi
