Biography
Luisa Sonza is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and actress. With a strident alto vocal instrument, her musical style traverses Latin, Brazilian, and Arabic pop, and she has been the recipient of several MTV Millennial, Brazilian Youth, and My Nick awards. Between the release of her self-titled EP in 2017 and her 2019 debut album Pandora, she released nine gold-, platinum-, and/or diamond-certified singles, including "Devagarinho" "Pior Que Possa Imaginar," and "Bomba Relógio" (feat. Vitão, who also appeared on 2020's Top 20 hit "Flores"). Her second long-player, 2021's DOCE 22, included the Top 20 single "Penhasco."

The daughter of farmers, Sonza was born and raised in Tuparendi in the rural interior of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. She began singing at song festivals at age five and at seven was hired by the band Sol Maior, with whom she performed intermittently until she was 17. In 2014, she began releasing self-made videos of cover songs to YouTube. Her channel became so popular that she earned the nickname "the queen of covers" on social media. In 2016 she attended Franciscana University intending to study law, but left after a semester to pursue music when Universal came calling and signed her to a record deal. She issued her first self-penned single, "Good Vibes," followed by a self-titled debut EP in 2017. The EP track "Rebolar" was issued as a single and video that topped YouTube's Brazilian charts.

In 2018, Sonza married singer and comedian Whindersson Nunes in a civil ceremony. She made her acting debut in an episode of the Dr. Darci series. That July she released the single "Devagarinho." It landed in the Top 50 at streaming and earned diamond certification. In October she cut songwriter Aguinaldo Silvato's "Nunca Foi Sorte," for use in the telenovela O Sétimo Guardião and made a cameo appearance in an episode singing it. A month later she released "Boa Menina" that also earned diamond certification. In December she issued "Nunca Foi Sorte."

In February 2019, Sonza re-recorded "Boa Menina" with a forro arrangement. In March, her original song "Pior Que Possa Imaginar" entered Brazil's Top 100 and the Top 20 at streaming; it was certified platinum in May. In June Sonza released Pandora, her debut long-player. She wrote or co-wrote seven of its eight songs -- five of them, including the diamond-certified "Garupa" featuring Brazilian singer and self-professed drag queen Pabllo Vittar, charted. Another album track, "Bomba Relógio" (ft. Vitão), was certified double platinum. Its video registered more than 60 million views. Before the year's ended, she participated in the Top 30 platinum hit collaboration "Combatchy" with Anitta, Lexa, and MC Rebecca.

Despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, Sonza stayed exceptionally busy in 2020. She divorced her husband in February and in March released the single "Braba," which charted in Brazil and Portugal and earned double-diamond certification. She followed it with "Flores," a duet with Vitão. Though it reached the Top 20, its video was temporarily removed from You Tube after media criticism regarding the pair's racy scenes -- they were romantically linked at the time. She also took on the role of Mel in the telenovela Amor de Mãe for several episodes. Between October and December, Sonza also found time to guest on other artists' singles, including Lexa's "Quebrar Seu Coração," Leo Santana's "Século 21," and Danna Paola and Aitana's "Friend de Semana"; she also issued her own "Turbo Modo" (feat. Pabllo Vittar and Anitta). In February 2021, Sonza released the Top 20 hit "Cansar Você" with Thiaguinho. It peaked at 18. In addition, she made guest appearances on Bruno Martini's "Ain't Worried," Katy Perry's "Cry About It Later," and "Attention" by Pedro Sampaio. In May she collaborated with Carol Biazin on the single "Tentação" and appeared in its controversial video. Immediately upon release, Sonza came out publicly as bisexual and was attacked by both mass and social media. She released the long-player DOCE 22 on July 18, her 23rd birthday, accompanied by two singles "VIP *-* (feat. 6Black)," and "Melhor Sozinha :)-:". A month later, a remix of the latter was issued in collaboration with singer Marília Mendonça. A third single, "Penhasco," was released in August; it peaked at 29. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
