Biography
Known most for her robust and church-honed voice, Tawiah is a progressive R&B artist who is also a writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. She made a name for herself in her native England with the contemporary folk-soul ballad "Watch Me" (2007), and around the same time toured the world as a spotlight-seizing member of Mark Ronson's band. In addition to a wide range of credits as a collaborator and featured vocalist, including material with kindred outliers such as Blood Orange and Kindness, Tawiah has released the EPs In Jodi's Bedroom (2008) and Recreate (2017), as well Starts Again (2019), a full-length released on the First Word label.

Born and raised in South West London, Tawiah sang in church, where she was a praise and worship leader, and had her musical interests further shaped by exposure to a wider range of Black music in her Battersea household. She learned to play numerous instruments and attended the BRIT School, after which she established herself as a supporting vocalist for the likes of Mark Ronson -- with whom she toured for two years as a lead and background singer -- and Corinne Bailey Rae. In 2007, Tawiah's "Watch Out" appeared on DJ Gilles Peterson's second Brownswood Bubblers compilation and was named the number two track of the year for his BBC Worldwide program. Early the next year, the song led off In Jodi's Bedroom, Tawiah's self-released debut EP. Tawiah was featured on projects by Simbad, Eric Lau, and Wale by the end of 2008.

Apart from some stray singles and a 2014 EP co-billed with Eric Lau, the singer was active chiefly as a collaborator, featured artist, and background vocalist for almost a decade, appearing on albums from the likes of Duran Duran, Blood Orange, and Kindness. Joined by co-writer and co-producer Sam Beste of Hejira, she made a second EP, Recreate, and released it on Hejira's Lima Limo Records in 2017. She and Beste then put together the album Starts Again, issued two years later by the First Word label. Just before its arrival, the Cinematic Orchestra released "Wait for Now," co-written and fronted by Tawiah. She and spatial artist Myrrh soon began to collaborate, evidenced first by a performance at the online Refraction Festival in 2020, with an album intended for release in 2021. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
