Crossing a lyrical distress of frustration with the pleasance of melodic, bouncy pop, the Seattle trio of Flake packaged this sound on their 1993 7" debut Start Without Me. Since then, the lineup of guitarist/vocalist Rob Middleton and bassist Ken Ackerlund would experience a number of drummers before Rob Cunningham came along in 1996. Following the Y Records release of Flake's first album, Box, the band would have the chance to support it as they toured with the likes of Love Battery and Muzzle.
