Biography
Woelv was the project of Geneviève Castrée, a Québécois musician, artist, and poet who first sang in punk bands when she was a teenager. Castrée focused on her drawing and writing for several years, working on poems, illustrations, and mini-comics, and only returned to music seriously when she wanted music to accompany one of her books, and decided to make it herself. As Woelv, Castrée layered her en français vocals and simple but evocative guitars into dreamy pop and soundscapes. Woelv's debut album, Pamplemoussi, was released in 2004 on P.W. Elverum Sun Ltd., the label run by the Microphones and Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum, whom Castrée married. The Gris EP followed in 2006, and Castrée's second full-length, Tout Seui Dans la Forêt en Plein Jour, Avez-Vous Peur?, was released by K Records late in 2007. Sadly, Castrée was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 (shortly after the birth of Castrée and Elverum's daughter), and she died from the disease in July 2016 at the age of 35. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
