Best known as the frontman of the jump-blues revival unit the Sax Maniacs, tenor saxophonist Johnny Reno was also among the most prominent sidemen on the contemporary Texas blues circuit. A native of Arkansas, Reno first emerged during the late 1970s as a member of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Triple Threat Revue; from 1980 to 1983, he also played with the Fort Worth-based Juke Jumpers. He led the Sax Maniacs for much of the decade, and alongside such like-minded groups as Roomful of Blues helped keep the horn-powered sound of traditional jump-blues alive during the modern era. At the tail end of the 1980s, he formed the Johnny Reno Band, a more rock-influenced concern than his previous projects; after spending the early 1990s touring with Chris Isaak, Reno then moved on to his next retro-styled band, the self-expanatory Lounge Kings. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
