Benson and his Combo, which was an eleven-piece-band, started their music career in the '50s. Within two decades Benson And The Combo had several hits, including "Taxi Driver" and "Freedom, Yes Sir." In 1960, Benson became the president of the Nigerian Union of Musicians and in 1981 he formed his own union call the Performing Artistes Association of Nigeria.
