As one of England's best instrumentalists, Roger Wilson has balanced a solo career with a variety of projects. A member of the House Band from 1994 until 1998, he recorded two albums with Urban Folk, a group he shared with Pete Morton and Simon Edwards, and one album with a trio he continues to share with influential British guitarist/vocalist Martin Carthy and fiddle and guitar player/vocalist Chris Wood. According to FolkRoots, Wilson's "guitar playing has a shifting ease about it. It's a deceptively simple style, really quite complex with layers of chords and lilting melodies." Wilson's musical career began in 1986 when he handed in his resignation as a graphic designer and moved to London to play music. His virtuosic playing soon made him much in demand as a session player. After recording the first of two solo albums -- The Palm of Your Hand -- Wilson helped form Urban Folk in 1988. The group recorded two albums: Urban Folk, Vol. 1 released in 1991, and Self Destructive Fools released in 1997. Wilson reached out to an international audience as a member of the House Band. During the five years he remained with the group, he made vital contributions to three albums: Another Setting in 1994, Rockall in 1996, and October Song in 1998. Since leaving the House Band, Wilson has alternated between solo performances and shows with Martin Carthy and Chris Wood. He released his second solo album, Stark Naked, in 1994 and his first album with the trio, Wood Wilson Carthy, in 1998. Wilson sang and acted in a musical production, #The Mysteries, at the Royal National Theater in 2000. He continues to reside in his hometown of Leicester. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
