Biography
Studying with Greco at the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesu Cristo, Vinci became the master of the chapel for the Prince of Sansevero, pro-vice master of the royal chapel, and eventually choir master for the same conservatory at which he studied. He was one of the teachers of Pergolisi and composed primarily for dramatic forms including comedies -- eleven -- and serious operas -- over twenty. Vinci composed in other forms as well including the oratorios and cantata. There are few modulations in his works co-indicative of the broach with Baroque music and the advent of the classical style. At once he formulated melodies in the tonic key and in the dominant key. Vinci also employed the use of multiple musical fragments or phrases throughout his arias which are easy to identify. It is unfortunate that Vinci was not able to realize the success that some of his works had after his death. "Artaserse," particularly, was well-received by many different audiences. It was so successful in fact that it was sung at the opening of the opera theater in Dresden. Other operas performed after his death meeting with success, were "Cantone in Utica," "Allesandro nell'Indie." and "Medeo." The melodic lines which Vinci composed were sharply distinguished with succinct leaps, distinct textures, and elegant sonorities. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
